Tunisia Recovers 3,852 Ancient Coins from the United States

On Thursday, April 24, 2025, Tunisia recovered 3,852 ancient coins dating back to the Roman and Late Antiquity periods. The coins were originally excavated between 1990 and 1993 by an American mission at the Bir Knisia site in Carthage.

They had been temporarily exported to the U.S. for cleaning, preservation, and study.

The return was coordinated by Dr. Susan T. Stevens of Randolph College, and the coins were secured by the National Heritage Institute at the Bardo National Museum.
