April 22–30: Tunisia Hosts African Lion 2025 Military Exercises

Military forces from Tunisia and several other countries kicked off the “African Lion 2025” (AL25) joint military exercise in Tunisia today, April 22, 2025.

According to the U.S. Embassy, the multinational exercise will continue until April 30. Its primary goal is to strengthen military readiness and enhance the participating countries’ ability to operate in complex security environments.

This marks the eighth consecutive year that Tunisia has hosted the African Lion exercise. Tunisia is the first of four host countries for AL25. Activities in the other three—Ghana, Morocco, and Senegal—are scheduled to begin in May.

Over 1,700 military personnel are gathering in Tunisia for the exercise, with more than 10,000 troops from over 40 nations expected to participate across the four host countries. In Tunisia alone, NATO member states such as France, Italy, and Spain will join forces with the U.S. and Tunisia in the AL25 drills.

Additional participants include countries like Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Nigeria, and Senegal, reflecting shared regional security objectives among African nations, according to the same source.
