Marine Le Pen Sentenced to Jail and Banned from Office

A French court sentenced far-right leader Marine Le Pen to four years in jail under electronic surveillance and banned her from running for office for five years, jeopardizing her 2027 presidential bid.

Le Pen, 56, and eight other National Rally (RN) officials were convicted of misusing European Parliament funds by employing assistants for party work. The scheme, involving 12 aides, cost 2.9 million euros.

All convicted RN members, including Le Pen, were barred from office, with the ban taking immediate effect, even if appealed.
