Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation as Canada’s Prime Minister

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he will be stepping down as the country’s leader and as head of the ruling Liberal Party. Speaking at a news conference in Ottawa, the 53-year-old leader confirmed his decision to resign once the Liberal Party selects a new leader.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its new leader,” Trudeau stated, marking a pivotal moment in Canadian politics.

The announcement comes during a period of prolonged political gridlock, which Trudeau cited as a key factor influencing his decision. He expressed his continued commitment to the well-being of Canadians but acknowledged the challenges of governing amid a paralyzed parliament.

“I care deeply about this country and I will always be motivated by what is in the best interests of Canadians. And the fact is, despite best efforts to work through it, parliament has been paralyzed for months after what has been the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history,” Trudeau said.

To ensure a smooth leadership transition, Canada’s parliament will be suspended until March 24 while the Liberal Party selects its new leader.
